San Marco in the heart of the city is Venice’s best-known area, one famous around the world. At the heart is the Piazza San Marco that Napoleon called “the world’s most beautiful drawing room.” Don’t be surprised that this is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in all Italy. Many buildings date back to the early Sixteenth Century. The original church that became the Basilica di San Marco was built in 828 to house the remains of Saint Mark the Evangelist.

From bare necessity, the bridges have turned into real symbols of the city, and are among the most representative features of Venice. Moreover each bridge, from the smallest to the most important one, from the public to the private ones, gives something more to this wonderful city, and offers unique sights to tourists. There are over 350 bridges all around the city, but some of them are certainly more famous than others, and can be considered as important monuments of the city.

Built in 2003, the hotel takes its name from the lush, green island of San Clemente on which it completely covers. With spectacular views of Venice and its lagoon, the island was once a stopping-off point for soldiers and pilgrims on their way to the holy land, and later used to entertain guests of the state. Present-day guests can experience some of this history with a visit to the remarkable 12th century church next to the hotel.

Although the square as appears now is characterised by a strong Renaissance taste, this area has begun to take shape in the Middle Ages, and throughout the centuries it has undergone several reconstructions and changes.

St Marks Square

St Mark’s area began to become the monumental core of the city in 828, when St Mark’s relics were brought to Venice, but at that time the square was very different from how it appears now: the square, indeed, was bounded by Rio Batario, a canal that was buried in 1156, and by a basin in front of the Ducal Palace, which was buried too.
