Savannah historic district

Savannah stands out for its leafy one-acre squares that punctuate the district—21 (out of an original 24) of them remain. America’s first planned city, Savannah was laid out in 1733 on a perfect grid by its founder, British general James Oglethorpe. ‘White gold’ (King Cotton) subsequently filled the port city’s coffers with real gold, and handsome mansions prospered. Those that survived the centuries eventually came under the protection of the Historic Savannah Foundation, born in 1955. At President Lincoln’s request, Savannah’s fabled architecture was spared burning during Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman’s scorched-earth military campaign in 1864.

There are various ways to take in the district—horse-drawn carriage, trolley, bus or bicycle—and many companies offer tours of the area. Some focus on sites mentioned in John Berendt’s 1994 best-selling book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which chronicled the eccentric lives of some of the city’s most colourful residents a decade earlier. ‘The Book’, as locals call it, brought a certain scandalous but good-natured notoriety to Savannah and continues to play a big part in boosting tourism.

Many of the city’s most prominent historic buildings now contain inns and B&Bs, fine restaurants and shops that may allow you a glimpse inside. Still, others offer even greater access as museums. The stately Davenport House Museum, headquarters of the Historic Savannah Foundation, dates back to 1820 and is one of the finest Federal-style city homes in the nation, filled with fine furnishings from the period.

British architect William Jay, who introduced the Regency style to America, designed many of the city’s most notable buildings. Among his best is the Owens-Thomas House and Museum, which deservedly earns more ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ than any other structure in the district. Overlooking stunning Oglethorpe Square, the 1816 mansion is best known as the place that hosted Revolutionary War hero the Marquis de Lafayette in 1825, and today it contains a magnificent exhibit of decorative arts, many collected by the Owens family, who lived in the house from 1830 to 1951.

The nearby Telfair Mansion and Art Museum is another of William Jay’s finest works and the South’s oldest public art museum, containing 4,500 works from the U.S., Europe and Asia, most dating from the 18th century to the present. The sculpture collection contains a work that will be familiar to those who own a copy of ‘The Book’. Sylvia Shaw Judson’s 1936 sculpture Bird Girl appears on its cover.

Niagra Falls

These majestic waterfalls leave one speechless. To witness the splendour of these falls at their peak, reserve your seat with one of the cheap flights to Canada for the late spring or early summer months. Don’t forget to capture the beauty of these devilishly attractive falls in your camera.

Ottawa

If culture turns you on, remember to keep Ottawa on the itinerary while booking flights to Canada. The destination is an all time favourite holiday spot. While summers spell as the chance to follow exhilarating biking tracks and chill out in gardens, the winter visitor may try out skating at the frozen Rideau Canal. This canal is often said to be the largest skating rink in the world. Don’t forget to check out on colourful events like the Changing of Guard on Parliament Hill and the RCMP march.
Montreal

Looking for a French experience in Canada? Plan a holiday in Montreal. This pristine compact city is full of French boutiques and after Paris remains the largest French speaking city in the world. While gourmets may sample the irresistible temptations served in world famous restaurants, party animals can paint the town red at the numerous nightclubs.

Other Popular Holiday Attractions in Canada:

Cabot Trail / Nova Scotia

This is actually a drive; a beautiful, scenic loop carved into the side of mountains that rise high above the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Baffin Island / Oikiqtaaluk / Helluland

This is the Canada’s largest island, and the fifth largest island in the world, lying between Greenland and the Canadian mainland, in the territory of Nunavut.

Vancouver / Victoria

Vancouver is a metropolitan city in the southwest corner of British Columbia, on Canada’s west coast. Victoria is a smaller city at the south end of Vancouver Island.

The Prairies

The prairie is a vast steppe-land area between the Rocky Mountains in the West and the Great Lake region in central Canada.

The Rocky Mountaineer

The Rocky Mountaineer travels from the coast of British Columbia to the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, and vice versa.

Old Québec City

It is the capital of Québec, located on the St. Lawrence River in Central Canada.

Bay of Fundy

It is an ocean bay stretching between the provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

As well, tourists can visit the Kokee Museum at the top of the canyon to view maps, history, and other details. At the top of the canyon, you can look over the Kalalau Valley to view the Na Pali coastline, beautiful Pacific, and the magnificent waterfalls.

Diamond Head State Monument, Oahu: A short hike through old military bunkers, Diamond Head is known in Hawaiian as Le’ahi named by Hi’laka, sister of the fire god Pele. It was given the name because the summit looks similar to the forehead (lae) of the yellowfin tuna fish (‘ahi). It was named Diamond Head by western traders who believed they had discovered diamonds on the crater’s slope in the late 1700′s. However, they were found to be calcite crystals which were not to have any value. The trail to the summit is a 1.4 mile hike that traverses an elevation of five hundred and sixty feet. The trail ends with magnificent views of Honolulu.

But even with a population of just under 5,000, Moab boasts enough great-outdoors options—plus epic film-worthy scenery to match—to justify a town ten times its size. The city, named after a Biblical kingdom, started life as a Mormon settlement in 1855, and went through a phase as a uranium boom town in the 1950s. Moab’s latest incarnation began in the 1980s, when proponents of a nascent sport called mountain biking discovered that the endless miles of colourful sandstone known as ‘slickrock’ were perfect for fat-tyred fun.

Moab has off-road trails galore, from easy spins to challenging single-track loops. The ‘granddaddy’ of them all is the punishing 10-mile Slickrock Trail, a kind of rite of passage for serious bikers—but starting with a shorter practice loop to get a feel for the naked sandstone is strongly recommended. The city’s unique location, in a narrow green valley split by the Colorado River, has made it known for prime river-rafting as well.

Numerous local tour companies such as Tag-a-Long Expeditions will guide you down white water on the Colorado or the nearby Green River. They’ll also arrange multi-day float trips down the placid Labyrinth or Stillwater canyons on the Green River.

But it was Moab’s ideal location that sealed its fate—it’s an easy 10 minutes from Arches National Park and less than an hour from Canyonlands National Park. Hiking trails and astounding views fill both, and rough dirt tracks and prospectors’ roads left over from the area’s mining days have helped make Moab one of the most famous destinations in the country for four-by-four enthusiasts or ‘jeepers’, as they’re known locally, who arrive in droves for Jeep Safari on Easter weekend.

On a more refined note, September brings the strains of chamber music, jazz and bluegrass to the red rocks during the world-renowned Moab Music Festival. Then it’s wild fun again when fat-tyre fans gather at the end of October for the Halloween Bike Fest-Evil.

Among the growing number of places to hang your hat, try the Gonzo Inn for the touch of retro 1970s charm it brings to this old mining town, complete with a bike wash station in the back and a pool that beckons your slickrock-weary body.

eTravelTrips.com

Colonial Williamsburg meticulously re-creates the crucial period of 1750 to 1775, the end of the colonial era and the anxious eve of the Revolutionary War. The level of detail is astonishing, from the actors who portray Revolutionary-era statesmen, blacksmiths, wig makers and slaves to the flocks of squawking ducks and grazing sheep. It’s the country’s largest and most popular living-history museum—and one of the world’s finest.

Colonial Williamsburg Virginia

The cultural and political capital of Virginia from 1699 to 1780, Williamsburg was home to government buildings and a lively social scene among the colonial aristocracy. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington both spent time here debating the merits of forming an independent country. In 1926, John D. Rockefeller Jr. initiated a top-to-bottom $68 million (£43 million) restoration in which 88 of the original buildings and 500 other structures were either restored or rebuilt, along with 90 acres of gardens and public greens. Today, it’s impossible to tell which of the buildings were restored and which were totally reconstructed on their original foundations.

Williamsburg is a treat for both adults and children. Walking the cobbled streets of the Historic Area, you might find yourself having an impromptu discussion with ‘Thomas Jefferson’, ‘Martha Washington’ or one of the wide cast of townspeople going about their daily lives.

You can attend the trial of a pig thief; watch a gunsmith craft a flintlock rifle; sign up for a candlelit tour of the city’s haunted spots; or view a performance by the town’s parading fife-and-drum corps. Tour the Georgian-style Governor’s Palace with its extensive topiary gardens and holly maze, the H-shaped Capitol, the Courthouse of 1770 with its pillories and stocks out front, and the George Wythe House, home to Thomas Jefferson in 1776, when he was a Virginia General Assembly delegate. Stop for a tipple at any of the four historic taverns offering colonial dishes in period settings.

Built in 19th-century Regency style and furnished with exquisite reproduction furniture, the august 1937 Williamsburg Inn was created as part of the town’s restoration and has hosted notables from queens to presidents since its earliest days. Three superb golf courses at the nearby Golden Horseshoe Golf Club include the Gold Course, one of Robert Trent Jones Sr.’s finest. The Williamsburg Foundation also offers guest rooms in 28 restored colonial homes, each with its own unique history.

Nearby is family fun of another sort: Busch Gardens, home to some of the highest-rated roller coasters in the country and great animal viewing. You can visit the grey wolves and marvel at the size of the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales, each of which stands at least six feet fall and weighs between 1,800 and 2,000 pounds. About five miles south of Williamsburg is the Williamsburg Winery, Virginia’s first modern winery and the largest in the state. It helped to launch the area’s now-flourishing wine industry, numbering some 100 vineyards.

eTravelTrips.com

The grassy Ellipse, north of the Washington Monument, links the Mall to the White House, one of the world’s most famous residences. George Washington himself chose the site of the executive mansion and oversaw construction through the 1790s, but the house wasn’t ready for occupancy until 1800, when second President John Adams moved in with his wife, Abigail.

The White House

Since then every president has made the home his own, though a few incidents over the years have caused temporary relocation. In 1814, the British torched the place, completely gutting its interior. Harry Truman and family also had to move out in the 1940s when the structure was found to be unstable, leading to another complete renovation. But the exterior is still exactly as architect James Hoban designed it in 1792.

Originally called the President’s House or the Executive Mansion, it was nicknamed ‘The White House’ early on, owing to the lime-based whitewash applied to keep the stonewalls from freezing. Paint eventually replaced the wash, and in 1901 Theodore Roosevelt made the nickname official.

Those lucky enough to join a tour (non-U.S. citizens must contact their embassy in Washington D.C. for assistance in submitting a tour request and heightened security means access is limited) can see a number of historic, though non-critical, areas of the mansion, including the State Dining Room (once Thomas Jefferson’s office); the Blue Room, with furniture selected by James Monroe after the 1814 fire; and the East Room, where Lincoln, Kennedy and five other presidents lay in state.

The West Wing—the area where government business is done—is strictly off-limits, as is the president’s residence. To get some idea of what you can’t see, stop at the White House Visitor Center, which offers films and displays on the house and its history.

If your invitation for a night in the Lincoln Bedroom hasn’t come through, you can arrange a stay across Pennsylvania Avenue at the 1927 Italian Renaissance-style Hay-Adams Hotel, for long a favorite of diplomats and visiting heads of state.

eTravelTrips.com

Carnegie Hall is a concert hall located in New York City at Seventh Avenue and Fifty Seventh street. Carnegie Hall opened in 1891 and is still used today. Over the last century many world renowned artists have performed there including Peter Tchaikovsky, Igor Stravinsky, and Maurice Ravel and George Gershwin. The Hall is one of the most famous concert halls in the world. The acoustic sounds are impeccable and the architecture is extravagant.

Carnegie Hall New York City

After the Civil War the United States of America became transfixed with music. New Yorkers were no exception. They got swept up in the craze like everyone else. But there was a problem in New York. The city did not possess a suitable concert hall. Being one of the most important cities in the world, New York needed a top notch place to play and listen to music. The city also needed a place to serve as a cultural center. Carnegie Hall fulfilled both of these needs.

Construction

Andrew Carnegie was one of the richest men at this time. He enjoyed music just like everyone else. Carnegie agreed that that New York City needed a concert Hall and decided to give money for this purpose. He proposed this to the city administrators, they approved of it and was in the works. Construction began on May 13, 1890. Carnegie Hall was constructed over a span of seven years.

Architecture

The chief architect was William Burnet Tuthill. He was very interested in the acoustics of the buildings. The sound quality in the hall is first-rate. Tuthill chose the style for the building from the Italian Renaissance. It is reminiscent of the Victorian age because it is so elegant. The interior of Carnegie Hall is beautiful. It contains marble in its foyer with great slanting arches in the ceiling and the doors. In the corners of the foyer there are columns with intricate carvings. This is apparent inside and outside of the building. The exterior is comprised of bricks which give the building a reddish hue. Both the inside and outside had the look of sophistication. It attracted the richest people and socially elite.

The internal elegance of the Hall

This building was constructed a few years before the steel era which led to the construction of the sky scrapers that crowd the New York sky line today. The method of building this hall was strange because it is made up of three buildings. There is the main hall which the show was actually performed. The second building, also known as the “lateral” building, contained studios, the recital hall and the chapter room, which was meant to be the meeting place for different organizations. The third building is more confusing than the other two. It is in between the other two buildings.

In 1894, the building was extended to seventh avenue from fifty-sixth street. and in 1896, the roof came off and a studio floor was added on, while a ten story tower was constructed on the lateral building. This extra construction made the building difficult to navigate. Tuthill built Carnegie Hall so solidly that it was meant to stand all of time.

The First Performer

The first performer at Carnegie Hall was a pianist named Franz Rummel. He was a well known artist. He was just an average performer with indifferent talents. The ironic thing about this was that he did not perform on opening. He played one month before opening night in the basement hall.

Opening Night Scares

Opening Night was really on May 5. 1891. The performer was not a no-name piano player. He was and is still one of the greatest composer in the history of the world. The performer was Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The concert hall was jammed full of New Yorkers. Tuthill was worried about this he did not believe that the steal columns could withhold the mass weight of all of the people. He left during the performance so he could examine the blueprints of the building. Carnegie Hall remained standing that night and is still standing today. It is still one of the most important structures in all of New York.

It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962,

The concert venue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, United States, located at 881 Seventh Avenue, occupying the east stretch of Seventh Avenue between West 56th Street and West 57th Street, two blocks south of Central Park.

eTravelTrips.com

During your European vacation, there could be no other wiser choice than to visit Italy as it is among the most romantic and spectacular of all places on earth. You can do many amazing things here as this is a beautiful tourist center. Most artists and art lovers consider Italy as the most inspiring destination to experience the true taste of art. Italian churches with its magnificent sculptures, paintings and historic pillars, make it an amazingly beautiful place to visit.

Italy by train

There are lots of different ways to get around Italy when seeing the lovely countryside. Train travels cost you less in Italy and often times is less expensive than bus travel.

And keep in mind that travel by train in Italy is comparatively more affordable than in many other nearby nations. However, like any other means of transport, major rail lines in Italy are crowded during rush hours and often times it is difficult to find a seat during peak season.

During August and other holiday seasons, finding seats on popular routes may not be easy. There are usually more seats available in first class.

For traveling between important cities of Italy, book in advance for Eurostar which is a popular train. Running through Italy and pausing at important places, both Intercity and Intercity Plus are the faster trains. The first class seats are superior and less crowded as compared to the second class ones. Ticket prices for Intercity Plus trains include the advance seat reservation charges as well. The Interregionali is faster of the two trains while the Diretto and Interregionali operate locally.

In Italy, when you are inside the train station, check the time table shown in white, yellow or orange colors to know the station where you have to board . As the yellow or orange colored poster gives information on departing trains along with the indications on route, the times the train runs, major stops in between you should check this and also the notes column giving weekends and holidays schedule changes.

While buying a train ticket, in order to save time at an Italian train station you can either go to a window with the information of the time, destination, class of travel and the number of tickets needed or use the ticket machine installed at the station that is easy to use. That will help you avoid long queues. Of course, you can purchase a ticket beforehand from an authorized agent with an extra fee.

Buying a ticket in a train ensures transportation but does not necessarily ensure a seat. But traveling by train no doubt is the fastest way to get around in Italy As a suggestion, if you see that your train is crowded and you don’t find a seat in the second class, you can ask the ticket conductor to upgrade it to first class.

Therefore, with just a little planning and knowledge, your Italian vacation can be very fulfilling, and you can see a lot more for less if you use the train system.

eTravelTrips.com

When it opened on April 23, 1914, Weeghman Park was a typical stadium of its time, with seating angled close to the field and no upper decks or skyboxes. Today, it’s called Wrigley Field, and there’s no other place quite like it in baseball.

Wrigley field Chicago

Charles Weeghman built it for his Chicago Whales, a club in the short-lived Federal League. When the upstart league disbanded after the 1915 season, he joined a group of investors to buy the National League Cubs and move them to his stadium—and thus began nearly a century of hardball history (and heartbreak) on Chicago’s North Side. Chewing gum magnate William Wrigley gained full ownership of the team in 1919, and the ballpark was renamed Wrigley Field in 1926. It’s the second-oldest park in the majors, after Boston’s Fenway Park, and the only one remaining from the Federal League.

Upper deck and skybox seating have been added over the years to increase its seating capacity from the original 14,000 to over 41,000, but Wrigley retains the intimacy that earned it the name ‘The Friendly Confines’. In 1937, the centre field wall was rebuilt in brick-fronted concrete with Boston ivy planted in front of it, creating one of the park’s most distinctive features; a ball lost after being hit into the dense leaves is an automatic ‘ground-rule double’. The 25-by-75-foot manual scoreboard, one of the last two of its kind (along with Fenway’s), was installed the same year—no batted ball has hit it yet—and postgame, a ‘W’ or ‘L’ flag still flies above it to announce the result to train commuters.

Wrigley had the first permanent concession stand in baseball (1914), the first organ (1941) and the first cell phone system between dugout and bullpen (2006). It was where fans were first allowed to keep foul balls hit into the stands, and where they first threw visiting teams’ home-run balls back on to the field (a tradition that is strictly enforced by a jeering crowd). It was the last Major League park to install floodlights for night games (its first game under lights, in 1988, was rained out after three and a half innings).

It was reportedly where, in game three of the 1932 World Series, Babe Ruth pointed to a spot in the centre field bleachers just before sending a home run right there; and where legendary announcer Harry Caray led the crowd in a boisterous rendition of ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ during the seventh-inning stretch. It was also where the Bears, Chicago’s National Football League team, won eight league championships before Soldier Field became their home. What Wrigley has never witnessed is a World Series victory by the Cubs, who last won the ‘Fall Classic’ in 1908, but their fans’ contagious this-is-our-year hopefulness is a key part of the Wrigley experience.

In Wrigleyville, the neighbourhood around the park, you’ll find souvenir hawkers, street musicians and loads of nightlife, including, of course, sports bars; at perennial favorites such as the Cubby Bear Lounge, there’s an ongoing party, win or lose.
