Chicago, Illinois The Art Institute of Chicago

For most of its history, Chicago has trailed New York City in key rankings in America—hence its nickname ‘Second City’—but its cultural offerings today put it among the first rank of cities anywhere. At the top of the list are the Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera; top theatres such as the Steppenwolf, Second City and Goodman; public art, including sculptures by Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró in and around Daley Plaza; and the Art Institute of Chicago, the crowning glory of the city’s lakefront.

When it opened on April 23, 1914, Weeghman Park was a typical stadium of its time, with seating angled close to the field and no upper decks or skyboxes. Today, it’s called Wrigley Field, and there’s no other place quite like it in baseball.

World-class theater and dance performances can be found at venues all across the country. Here are our faves.

1. No theater district in America is better known than New York City’s Broadway. The avenue is home to some 40 large professional theaters, with countless smaller stages nearby.

2.Some of the biggest names in American comedy in the past half century have performed at The Second City in Chicago. The theater is famous for sketch revues based on improvisational comedy techniques.

The U.S. is home to some fabulous big-city art museums, but – surprise – there’s also great art viewing in several smaller cities. Here’s where to go for the ultimate art tour:

1. New York City’s renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s largest art museums, houses an astonishing 2 million pieces. Save energy for the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum.

2. Treat yourself to a peek at the new “Art of the Americas” wing at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Across the street, lush artworks adorn the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, an Italianate palazzo.

3. Art lovers converge on the Santa Fe Indian Market. The city’s 200 galleries are a major attraction, as are the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture and Georgia O’Keeffe Museum.

Chicago’s great magic lies in its mix: sophisticated yet friendly, and bustling city streets adjacent to sparkling Lake Michigan. Plus, the stunning year-round array of things to do along with its plethora of free activities, make Chicago the perfect destination for any vacation!

In this city where the skyscraper was born, city streets wind through urban canyons, shaped by the world’s leading architects, and carve into diverse neighborhoods – each with its own fascinating flavor. Take a boat cruise or walking tour to see breathtaking architecture. Or catch magnificent views of the city from Skydeck Chicago at Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) or the John Hancock Observatory.
