Cubans have been living in downtown Miami since the early 20th century, but it wasn’t until the Cuban Revolution of 1959, when thousands of refugees resettled here, that the Cuban community assumed a central place in Miami’s social, political and cultural life.

Used to be, the Sarasota area was synonymous with snowbirds and a slow pace. The snowbirds are still here (can you blame them?) but Sarasota is a serious cultural capital, with Florida’s state art museum (The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art); resident opera, ballet and symphonic companies; and eventful film and culinary landscapes. Attractions are artful (see Towles Court Arts District); sea-inspired (in two aquariums and a historic fishing village); and beachy: islands and keys shelter million-dollar estates, unassuming cottages and posh resorts supported by sunny shopping villages, beach side restaurants and recreation at all speeds.

2.Some of the biggest names in American comedy in the past half century have performed at The Second City in Chicago. The theater is famous for sketch revues based on improvisational comedy techniques.

While spectacular views and fun experiences linger inside these famous spots, at the end of the day you will still feel exhausted. For a change, you may consider visiting other lesser known, less crowded spots in Florida worth a stopover. Why not try setting your sight on to Florida’s sublime spaces between, as marked by its secret beaches?

To the south, Key West has a Mardi Gras mood with Fantasy Festivals, Hemingway look-alike contests and the occasional threat to secede from the Union. It’s an island whose melting-pot character allows crusty natives to mingle (more or less peacefully) with eccentrics and escape artists who lovingly call this 4-mi sandbar “Paradise.” Although life elsewhere in the island chain isn’t quite as offbeat, it’s nearly as diverse.
