Colonial Williamsburg meticulously re-creates the crucial period of 1750 to 1775, the end of the colonial era and the anxious eve of the Revolutionary War. The level of detail is astonishing, from the actors who portray Revolutionary-era statesmen, blacksmiths, wig makers and slaves to the flocks of squawking ducks and grazing sheep. It’s the country’s largest and most popular living-history museum—and one of the world’s finest.

Kings Dominion, located in a suburb 20 miles from Richmond, Virginia, recently was named Virginia’s Most Exciting Theme Park. It features 400 acres of rides and fun around almost every corner. You can experience some of the biggest roller coasters in the country, one of the highest drop towers in the world with a 272 foot drop. This happens at 75 miles per hour so is pretty scary!

Another fun aspect of Kings Dominion is Waterworks – a 20 acre water park for your enjoyment when it is hot outside (a common occurrence from June to September here).

Monticello is one of the most famous US national landmarks, and is located not far from Charlottesville, VA. This was the beloved home of Thomas Jefferson, and he designed the house and property himself. Monticello was modeled on some of the neoclassical principles that were noted in some of the works by Andrea Palladio, who was an Italian Renaissance architect. The house is set on an 850 foot peak in the mountains that are called the Southwest.

The region known today as the Hampton Roads Area is made up of not only the large natural harbor, into which five rivers flow, but of the peninsula to the north that extends southeast from Williamsburg, and the Tidewater area between the mouth of the harbor and the Atlantic Ocean. On the peninsula are the cities of Newport News and Hampton; to the south and east are Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach.
