From around mid-February to early March, the city comes alive as it celebrates Mardi Gras with parades, floats, special events and parties.
Outdoor activities are plentiful. Walk the boardwalks through Alligator Alley, home to more than 100 alligators, some 13 feet long. Go bird-watching on Dauphin Island, one of the top flyways for bird migration in the United States.
